The Specialist-Knee program is one of a series of study areas offered at Yoga Mandir. The specialist programs have been developed to assist students and teachers to develop greater confidence in their practice when working with specific needs.  It has also been designed to equip them with a variety of practical techniques and modifications that will enhance participation within the practitioner Yogasana courses.

The Specialist-Knee program offered Yoga Mandir Institute is comprised of three parts:

  • The Specialist-Knee workshop – Attendance engages practitioners through the senses (Indriya Samyama), to understand how to work pragmatically in their own practice; gauging and personalising modifications of asanas for optimum health of themselves and/or their students.
  • Online study resources – A range of quality study resources have been developed to enable students to engage deeply in the program. These resources are accessed through Yoga Vidya, (Yoga Mandir’s online study platform).  Reviewing the audio-visual material and contributing to discussion forums prior to attendance at the workshop is essential to optimise your learning experience.
  • The Knee health practice – A practice developed to respond, mobilise, strengthen and alleviate non-specific knee symptoms experienced during practice.

The Specialist-Knee program is underpinned by the Yama’s and Niyamas; the first two disciplines of Astanga Yoga.  These disciplines form the basis for ethical practice.

The Specialist knee program will be conducted as a weekend workshop incorporating four sessions, (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon), and is structured across the groups of asana. For example: standing poses, seated poses, forward bends, twists, inversions and backbends.  Each session will focus on a group and explore the modifications and use of props and supports within that group.

Key elements to the program include:

  • Practice that differentiates objects, and then experience to develop discernment.
  • Understanding the relationship between thought and pain.
  • Cultivation of dispassion and clarity in observation.
  • Developing feedback systems that assist student to gauge their limits.
  • The application of Iyengar methodology in working with injuries.
  • Developing a range of practice modifications so that students work to their own capacity.
