T-T05 is the fifth subject in the theory of teaching section of the Teacher Development program. Its title ‘Being where students are at’ relates to valuing the journey of each student. As teachers of yoga, we recognise that each student presents at a ‘point in time’. Based on this, we consider ways of responding to the student.
‘If there were no law of cause and effect then all men and women would have the same intelligence, same mind and same psychological poise. But you find no one who is the same or equal to another. All are not from the same mould. Everyone’s mental state, psychological behaviour and intellectual capacity differs. For example, in a class, there may be about forty students with one teacher. All hear the same words of the teacher, and note down the points according to their mental calibre. Even if all make the same notes, their exam results will be different’.

The subject aims to explore the elements within the teaching/learning context to consider what it takes to teach with ‘dispassion’ – that is, without attachment, and to confirm the importance of our practice for the development of compassion for our students.
