Conference statement

I come from a very catholic background. When I had a bad sports’ accident where I injured my left leg so much that I was not able to study sports and sports medicine anymore.  I was very depressed and friends of mine took me to the first yoga classes in Holland / across the border. The leg could not be helped, I could not even sit.  So I stopped following the class and turned my back to the group and to the yoga teacher. He came, pulled me around and shouted at me: “Hey lady! it is all in your head.”  That really helped – it helped to correct my mind. From then on, apart from meditation and pranayama I slowly started with stretching legs etc. At home my parents sharply forbid to talk about yoga.  “Do not infiltrate your younger brothers and sisters!” My brothers practised Eurythmia (Steiner) and when talking with me about what I did they said: Are you still doing your gymnastics? Later my father had a very severe hip issue and finally, after several hip operations, sat in a wheelchair. I could see that the method of BKS Iyengar could help – and that I could help him. Father and Mother refused: we are Catholic Christians! – I told them that I would not come back home if they would continue to refuse my help. After a couple of days my father rang me up, said he would come. My answer: you have to bring mother as well: we will need an assistant.  Within 3 days he could stand and walk – he was so happy. Being an Ex-Palatine monk he wanted to read now – he dealt in depth with the philosophy of yoga and Buddhism. Later also my mother wanted to practice yoga.

At the end of her life, she invited me to an “official” meeting: “I have to talk to you.”  I thought something very serious had happened. But she said: “After all the years I want to tell you: “I am very happy that you have your Yoga. I understand what you experience when you practice. You are in close contact with yourself and the divine energy in you.”
